    Brainstorming Heritage

India is a country of many cultural livings. Almost all the states are different to each other. India is very known for its diversity. It is also known as a federal union. There is a saying in our Bengali culture, that India has all the seasons and views of the world whether it’s a sand desert (Rajasthan) or an ice desert (Ladakh). Indian civilization is one of the oldest civilizations in the world which is still the day alive. The Vedic culture of Hindus is yet alive and well practised. Interestingly, it has the most unique practising religion in the world which is called Hinduism. it is a cultural phenomenon that rose with its civilization specifically called the Indus civilization. The very interesting fact about the Hindu people is that the Hindu identity is not related to its religion but to its land. Yet Hindu identity is judged as a religious identity. Hindus gave birth to many great philosophies including Sanatana Dharma, Buddhism, Jainism and so on. With these ideologies, there also resides Muslim and Christian people with harmony and piece.

Durga Puja, biggest Hindu festival in Bengal

India has several heritage sites. According to Wikipedia, there are 40 World Heritage Sites located in India and out of these, the primary sites to be visited are the Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, Agra Fort, and Taj Mahal, all of which were inscribed in the 1983 session of the World Heritage Committee (‘List of World Heritage Sites in India’). Also, there are thousands of Hindu temples which are also a part of not just Indian culture but also of Heritage.

In my opinion, Heritage is part of a culture which is something remarkable to that culture and shared from generation to generation. Heritage may vary in huge aspects. In a general outline, heritage is something that defines the past of a country or a culture.

    UNESCO and world heritage

So, to add furthermore about Heritage, heritage can not just be defined as a part of the culture, but it also becomes a part of someone’s identity too. Again, UNESCO defines world heritage as “the designation for places on Earth that are of outstanding universal value,” and defines culture as a set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual, and emotional features of a society or a social group (What Is Cultural Heritage?).  According to the UNESCO world heritage website, there are 1157 heritage property sites (Centre).  All those places do not just have a cultural value or an identical value but overall create a global value for which UNESCO declared them as a world heritage site rather than simply declaring it a cultural heritage. Once again, UNESCO has a very broader perspective on defining a culture. Therefore, the idea of heritage is also broadened through the definition of heritage.

    A little heritage theory

Heritage creates something brand new in the here and now that draws from the past. Pieces of history are yours to find” (Kirshenblatt-Gimblett 370), implying that heritage already exists before it is discovered, evaluated, conserved, and celebrated. It’s a way of creating art right now that draws inspiration from the past (370). Heritage increases the worth of something already in existence. When an asset’s history is considered, it’s value increases even if it’s no longer operational (371). It’s not something that the economy cares about. As a means of “exporting” their product, heritage businesses rely on international visitors (373). Having a connection to one’s past helps one feel at home (373). As with tourism in general, heritage productions highlight the objects’ alienness from their display environments (374). Tradition and tourism both benefit from heritage’s ability to preserve and present them (374).

Tradition and folklore: similarities and distinctions

Kirshenblatt-Gimblett contrasts heritage with folklore by pointing out that both involve the passing on of cultural knowledge and meaning from one generation to the next, but that heritage is typically associated with institutionalized and formalized practices of cultural preservation and presentation. Conversely, folklore is typically considered a more casual and bottom-up form of cultural expression.

  • Understanding Observation: A Key Skill for Success

    What is observation?

Observation is a skill developed through understanding what is actually and specifically required to complete a task. To observe something, we need to go further than just looking at it. When we look at something and our job is to observe, it gives us a greater purpose. Observing leads us to examine, investigate, or specify how or what is happening. Observation is a qualitative skill that enhances our focus on a specific quality or characteristic. It is also a data collection method used in different fields of study, such as statistics, social studies, psychology, political science, business modules, and so on. The given video is a perfect example of observation. The observation skill relates to taking precautions while safely crossing streets. The first is to look at the right and left sides, and the task is not just to look but to make someone aware of the coming vehicles from any side. When a person is aware that no vehicle is approaching, he or she may proceed down the road. Again, the use of hedgehogs in the video has been linked to specific observation skills. It gives us the idea that this video is made for educating children.

The role of the observer may vary from field to field. However, the general roles of an observer are collecting data, understanding, examining, studying, making decisions and so on. The whole process goes through a careful vision. A good observer is always good at finding out things easily through his or her vision. To narrow down an observation, an observer must be pinpoint specific on what he is looking for and what he is going to do. For instance, in the given video, the hedgehogs are the observers. They are trying to cross the road. So, their first observation is on the street whether any vehicle is coming from the left or the right. When they discover no vehicles, their second task is to cross the road safely. Overall, in this video, there are four tasks done by the observer: to stop, look, listen, and live.

In the literary industry, observation plays a vital role. What an observer does may vary on the role of an observer. For instance, as an author, one must focus on what his readers seek from him, how is he going to write his story and how he will make his reader able to understand what he wants to express. As a reader, one must focus on the theme, writing style, background information, character information, and short details to understand an author’s motive. As an analyser or a critic, one must focus on the perspective of the writing, the context of the writing, and do a close reading of the text and subtle details to analyse the writing.

Observation is an important skill to lead a human life. Observation can be defined as one of the survival skills for human beings. I think there are several types of observation according to circumstances such as self-observation, laboratory observation, natural observation, interactive observation, non-interactive observation, direct observation, and indirect observation.

Further Observation based on Bogdan Participant Observation:

By observing the video and the text, I understand that observation is focused mainly on two types of observation, and these are a participant and non-participant observation. Participant observation is mainly a research-based observation where a researcher observes participants’ behaviour. According to Bogdan participant observation, “Participant observation refers to a research approach in which the major activity is characterized by a prolonged period of contact with subjects in the place in which they normally spend their time. During the encounters, data, in the form of field notes, are unobtrusively and systematically collected” (Bogdan 303).

In participant observation, research must be conducted from a public interest rather than personal interest, research is recorded so that it can be further analysed. Participants’ behaviour and interactions are normally recorded. The purpose of the participant observation is to understand complex social settings and relationships so that they can introduce new theories. The researcher would try to understand the world according to the participant’s view of the world (303). Again, the participants in the research are aware of the data a researcher is going to use. The reason behind this is to let participant understand and answer the questions properly. The goal of participant observation research is to understand as fully as possible the situation being studied without disturbing that situation (304). Although the observer focuses his greatest effort to data analysis following the fieldwork stage of research, analysis is a continuing and constant activity. Particular ideas, concepts, and models are developed in the field and tested, refined, or discarded as the study advances (307).

There are different observations done in the Bogdan Participant observation such as,

    1. Observation to defend or attack the works of others.
    2. Observation of students of the special education institutions to understand their world.
    3. Observation of the guardians of the students in an informal way.
    4.  Observation on the special education programme. In that case, the observer is trained and practised.
    5. The research role method where the researcher is a mixture of an objective recording machine and an empathetic human being.

     Observation project: First thoughts

My job as an observer during a face-to-face reading entail utilizing my senses to discuss the circumstance. In addition to any tangible things in the setting, I would pay great attention to understanding the individual’s body language, facial expressions, and voice tone. Being there in person enables me to notice things that would not be heard or apparent online, such as changes in posture, fidgeting, or alterations in the atmosphere. I may also be able to receive information that is not immediately audible or visual by using my intuition and other extrasensory experiences.

I would play a similar observer role as an observer during an online reading, but I would like to place a greater emphasis on visual and audio signals. I would listen carefully to the speaker’s tone of voice, word choice, and any non-verbal indications that are captured on video. Any contextual clues offered by the surrounds or backdrop that are captured on camera would likewise be considered. There may be fresh information accessible to me in the form of the person’s online presence, even though certain characteristics of physicality may be lost in online reading. So, overall, I will try to take as much as data I can collect whether it is an online observation method or a face-to-face method. Undoubtedly, there would be more opportunities in observing and collecting data in face-to-face data collection. Yet I would not keep any space for leaving any opportunity for losing data in online observation.

This is the possible list of points that I can analyse.

    1. Participants’ overall mood and behaviour during the interview.
    2. Any change in participants’ behaviour such as feeling anxious or relaxed.
    3. Participants’ level of engagement, ensuring how authentic information they are providing.
    4. Applying any specific technique or method to get the exact information.
    5. Understanding Participants  interest and disinterest while collecting data.

    Observing Cata Holm

    • Normally she talks to woman. Now she is talking infront of man as well. She seems to be introvert.
    • She just tried to be herself.
    • Her eye contact and a jolly face is constant.
    • She encourages to be authentic.
    • She is anxious but still keep going on.
    • She accepts the fact that she is embarrassed. She learned to accept herself.
    • She is trying to make it interesting to keep the attention of the listeners.
    • She is trying to get the attention of women as the book mainly focused on the experience of being a mother.
    • She expresses what she has been through during her pregnancy so that she can make the reader experience her feelings.
    • Her confidence grew high with the passage of time.

    Repetitive observation of the video:

After watching the video again, I became more aware of Catia Holm’s posture and hand gestures, among other aspects of her body language. I also picked up on softer indications like her voice tone and how she reacts to certain audience members.

Taking stock: From what I’ve noticed, Catia Holm is a charming and engaging speaker who knows how to engage with her audience. She expresses herself with humour and movements and appears to actually enjoy talking to them. I might use my observation to motivate myself on how to express myself publicly and how to overcome my fear of public speaking.

    Again: How do you observe?

Analysing data: The given flowchart my way of data collection for research project.

    Project Holm: Outline

    Outline of the Project :

I want to do my internship in a literary heritage site. I want to work as a literary tour guide. This internship project will focus mostly on literary heritage to show how important cultural significance is. This can help the heritage industry by bringing in people from different backgrounds who are interested in other cultures. This project can also inspire people in my home country of Bangladesh to use similar models of cultural coverage to make the heritage industry there more diverse and open to everyone. Here, I’ll try to sum up what I hope to accomplish with this project:

    1. Define the project’s goals and parameters.
    2. State the purpose and research question.
    3. Do some research into the history of literature.
    4. Conduct a comprehensive literature review of the literary heritage sector.
    5. Recognize the current tendencies and global impacts of cultural heritage.
    6. Suggestions for enhancing cultural coverage of literature’s historical significance .
  • Defining Literature and how it works

What is Literature? How it works:
Literature is the way to understand what authors want to express and make their ideas available to their readers and the literary industry make it easier for authors to reach their reader. Author, Literacy, Literature, Publishing, Marketing, and Printing plays an important part in the Literary industry, and here are the definitions of the terms I choose to write.

Author – Whoever puts pen to paper and creates something, be it a blog post, a poem, a novel, or anything else, is called an author. Writers typically make a living as full-time professionals. His or her drive comes from a desire to express originality and beauty to the world through writing.

Literacy – When describing a person’s ability to read and write, the term “literacy” is typically employed. Whether or not a person possesses this quality indicates his or her level of subject expertise. The capacity to comprehend, produce, and reform ideas into something useful is also a hallmark of creative intelligence. You can be classified as “numerate” even if you don’t have any mathematical skills by using this phrase.

Literature – Literature encompasses all forms of written expression, including but not limited to poetry, drama, novels, short stories, and other creative works. It needs to be artful, focused, and of a certain type.

Publishing – Publishing is the business or profession of widely disseminating an author’s book, journal, or newspaper to a global or national audience. It replicates an author’s works and makes them available for mass consumption. Publishing is the development and distribution of printed books, journals, newspapers, and magazines. A publishing house operates in stages. First, the publishing business negotiates a contract with an author to publish their work. Finally, the publisher receives the author’s story, reshapes and reedits it, and then produces the final version of the story. When the writing is ready for publication, the publishing house makes it available to readers by publishing it.

Marketing – Marketing is a commercial approach that emphasizes the promotion of a product from supplier to purchaser. The objective of marketing is to generate buyer demand for a product so that it can establish its market value. It is an incredibly significant term for literature. The marketing strategy of the literary industry is to identify the selling point of a piece of writing and its ideal audience. Typically, the publishing house does market before publication so that they are aware of the product’s worth. It helps them determine how many products or publications to make or release based on demand.

Printing – Printing is the process of producing books, journals, magazines, and newspapers in large quantities. It is a method for mass-producing written materials. The printing press is one of the most important inventions in the history of the publishing industry. In 1440, the creation of the printing press occurred in Germany. Since then, it has been an integral part of the literary industry.

There is a great deal of significance and relevance to the literature industry in the terminology I have used. These are the most important aspects of the literary industry, which I have attempted to define using the terms I have chosen. There is a direct connection between every single concept. In this context, “author” is the central concept because it underlies all the others. For instance, it is up to the author to decide if his or her work requires a certain level of literacy. The author’s work can contribute to the education and literacy of a people. While reading an author’s work, you may need a higher reading level to fully grasp the ideas and information being presented. Again, it’s up to the author to decide what genre he’ll be writing in, and then the marketing may be tailored to target the right audience and generate sales. On the other side, the author would choose a publishing house based on the quality of the author’s work, and that company would be responsible for publishing and printing the author’s work.

    Communication Circuit:

The Model of a “Communication Circuit” has two key components and these are communication and circuit. A circuit is a circular, linear route that starts and ends at the same place. Communication, on the other hand, is the way to share, import, and export information using a medium. Both words play a vital role in this model. The circuit of the literary industry is the book. The book itself is a materialistic manifestation of an author which creates a connection among the Author, publisher, distributor, bookseller, and reader. Since the book is the circuit, the communication starts with the author writing the book. The book then reaches the publisher, distributor, bookseller, and finally the readers. The reader reads the book which helps them understand the author’s point of view and reading the book helps the reader to reach the author’s level and get connected to him. So, Authors, publishers, printers, distributors, bookstores, and ultimately, readers, all play important parts in the book creation process, which is the center of the communication chain. As a result of reading, readers might once again take on the role of writer. The communication pathway also highlights the socio-political and economic influences of various actors in the value-creation process.

The challenge here is to maintain contact between the circuit and the many literary industry segments. If any of the connections appear to be broken, the entire circulation could be in jeopardy. In 2020, for example, the distribution and sale of books were completely interrupted, resulting in a severed communication chain. Another challenge is creating value for a book on a different platform or in a different language. Certainly, an author can catch the attention of a reader when the cultural, socio-political, and economic conditions are different. Furthermore, the suitability to translate the original book into a perfect translated book.

Robert Darnton and History of the books:

According to Darnton’s concept of communication circuit, books and other written works play an important role as a circuit that encircles communication between authors, book publishers, booksellers, and, finally, readers who reconnect with the author through the book they’ve read.

The life cycle of a printed book, however, is consistent across genres. The author, printer, shipper, bookseller, and reader all form nodes on a communications circuit that begins with the reader and ends with the author. Writing, whether it be Shakespearean sonnets or instructions for building a radio kit, is influenced by the author’s familiarity with, and participation in, the literary community. Each step of this process is of interest to bibliographers, as is the process as a whole, including its variations across space and time and its connections to other systems of economics, society, politics, and culture. This model illustrates the interconnected nature of each stage, allowing the reader to see how they fit into the bigger picture of what the person is doing at any given time. It could, with some tweaking, be applied to any time in the history of printed books.

Finally, I believe the combination of “Communication” and “Circuit” points directly to Darnton’s Communication Circuit. Following the model of the book as a circuit that links the writer, the publishing house, the distributor, and the reader, the communication circuit aids the book in completing its life cycle.

    Publishing of Books:

According to the following videos, the recent publishing houses exceed the limit of Robert Darnton’s model. There are far more connections than in Darnton’s model. For instance, E-books and the internet are available in recent times, and therefore, publishing houses need more recruitment than is mentioned in the model.  However, there are different jobs done by publishing houses. Below are the jobs done by publishing houses.

    1. Hear the author.
    2. Proofreading, setting the tone, and setting the value of the books,
    3. Syndicating the story out.
    4. Working on the contexts and orders.
    5. Marketing and finding out the key selling points.
    6. Creating a book cover.
    7. Creating an eBook version of the book and making it suitable for all platforms.
    8. Making sure that eBooks are placed in all the online platforms possible.

If the publishing house job is compared with Robert Darnton’s communication circuit, I find the publishing houses now do most of the job books need. Authors nowadays don’t have to rely on separate institutions to publish and sell a book. From rewriting the book to selling the book, all the jobs are done by the publishing house. It is interesting how publishing houses have modernized themselves. Therefore, I find more similarities with Adrian Van Der Weel’s communication circuit model.

Adrian van der Weel and Darnton’s Communications Circuit:

Comparatively, Adrian Van Der Weel’s model is both broad and well-explained, making the circumstances count, while Darnton’s model was overly generalized. Today’s publishing problems (e.g., the Internet, advertising) were all resolved by Adrian in the 20th century. To be more specific, his model primarily considers the role that economic forces play in severing the entire communication chain. The Internet has created a completely new market and becomes a very competitive participant which could completely change the future of the market, and this has led to a radical shift in how books are published and distributed. The process of textualization, or visualizing, has also evolved beyond the written word to include visuals and audio.

The process of textualization, or visualizing, has also evolved beyond the written word to include visuals and audio.

The dramatic shifts in the publishing industry depicted by the more recent model are striking. The Internet is predicted to attract a larger and more sophisticated audience than was first anticipated. Further, with the aid of the internet, one publishing house does not need to spend a great deal of time on a single book because printing is unnecessary. A single book can be reproduced many times over with little effort and investment. Book sales do not require many intermediaries. The publishing house can handle everything, and an e-reader or online bookstore like Google Books would handle the rest. The process of distribution changed so immensely. With hundreds of thousands of books available online, though, readers may have trouble zeroing in on the perfect read. If the reader is unfamiliar with the author or the works, it can be challenging to receive the right information. However, there is a chance of success if the product is properly categorized.

Theory to Practice: Getting Published as an Author:

The Kissing Booth is a teen romantic comedy. At the beginning of 2011, Beth Reekles began penning her novel. Soon after, she began using a brand-new website called Wattpad to compose her novel. In 2014, an electronic edition of the book produced by Random House and released on the Amazon Kindle platform gained popularity, prompting a reprint by Simon & Schuster that same year. Next, in 2015, the book was published in paperback.

    PC: BIng Image

Universal Pictures released its movie version of the book in 2017. Sony Pictures optioned The Kissing Booth in 2015, and production began in Los Angeles County in July 2016. Beth Reekles, the author, was also heavily involved in the production of the film, serving as an executive producer alongside MTV Films’ Brian Robbins.

Beth began writing at 14 and sought ways to share her work. She became popular on Wattpad which was a social reading and writing site. She published The Kissing Booth chapter by chapter and immediately gained a following that gave her constructive criticism. She garnered huge views, and comments and the user voted her best teen novel award. This helped her write a terrific novel chapter after chapter. She soon became a sensational writer popular among the young generation.

The internet has had a significant impact on the publishing industry, both positively and negatively. Readers can now more easily find books than ever before, but authors are finding it more difficult to promote themselves successfully considering the abundance of information readers have at their fingertips and plenty of misinformation too.

    Yet Another Circuit Revision:

The Book Unbound is a project by the University of Stirling that revises the communication circuit by Robert Darnton based on two separate research surveys. The poll was done by Padmini Ray Murray and Claire Squires. The surveys utilize two separate methodologies. One consists of a literature review and a series of case studies. Elements of the communication circuit for business transformation, the significance of the business model, and the business’s viability are the primary research considerations. This approach collects its data through interviews with both primary and secondary sources. To demonstrate the capability of the new technology, the second way is digital publication using an iPad application.

Considering the changes in the new model compared to Darnton’s model, There have been a lot of changes in the twentieth century in the literary industry. A literary agent has become a key figure between the author and the publisher in Anglo-Saxon publishing. This generally entails editorial duties in addition to business management tasks such as rights sales and contract negotiation. At this time, publishers routinely contracted out various functions, such as editorial, design, marketing, and sales. The proliferation of bookstores that also sell music, movies, and games has also played a significant influence, as have wholesalers and distributors.

Adrian Von Weel’s are more focused on the economy and the internet whereas the models given by Murray and Squire are more focused on Software. Therefore, they differ slightly in structure and nature.  Since desktop publishing software and the internet became more commonplace in the late 20th century and digital publishing became more commonplace in the 21st, self-publishing has exploded. Traditional publishing services like editing, layout, promotion, and sales are no longer necessary, although authors still use them along with newer digital ones like conversion and media content creation. As they position themselves as content aggregators and e-reader producers, merchants and distributors are shifting their roles.

How Do You Capture Your Readers’ Interest?

Promotional advertisements from Bolinda Audio and Vintage Books portray Atwood’s reinvented characters as the long-awaited release of a book. Here, the marketing and advertisement of the writing process are crucial. The book has reached the stage before its official release. One of the book’s most notable qualities is its ability to attract a niche readership. The marketing of a book is an essential component of the creative process since a well-liked book is one that sells many copies. The advertising hypes what the writer is bringing back to life to pique the interest of readers and audiences; when the customer knows exactly what to expect, it’s much simpler to bring a book to life. Again, Darnton’s term is relevant here. He made a valid point when he said that readers take on the role of the author when they envision what happens to the book’s characters because of things not included in the text. It is much more like dream coming true for the readers because the author gives life to what audiences are willing to do.

Just “A Shop where Books are Sold”? :

So, to complete the task I have been to three popular bookstores in Göttingen which are Thalia, Hugendubel, and Vaternahm. I have been to two Hugendubel, two Vaternahm, and one Thalia outlet. Hugendubel and Vaternahm outlets are mostly specialized bookstores, whereas Thalia is a more generalized one. Therefore, in Thalia, almost all genres of books are available there. On the other hand, One Hugendubel store is specialized in academic books, and the other one is in Children’s books. However, the common thing about all the bookstores is that every bookstore has a bestseller option. They do not forget to sell the most sold books. When it comes to selling the books, the manager of the bookstore said, “We love to keep the books that sell.” When I ask him how he understands that this book will be sold. He answered, “Experience, I have been working here for 13 years and I can understand which books can be sold and which ones not.” Again, when I ask him if he does not give any chance to new books, he replies, “It depends on the book and yes, we sometimes like to give new books a try.”

German people like varied kinds of books. They especially, like novels, history books, and books on extracurricular activities. When it comes to selling books, I ask all the bookstores about their most sold books. Hugendubel near the university replies that they mostly sell law books as it is an academic bookstore. Vaternahm replies that they do not have any specific genres that sell the most. They sell the books at a lower price and try different books. Thalia replies that German people like Novels, Fiction, Non-fiction, Sci-fi, Crime, Fantasy, and Thriller. Since Thalia is the biggest store in Göttingen, undoubtedly Thalia has the flashiest display.  It contains almost all the genres possible, such as bestsellers, best sellers of every genre, children’s books, novels, philosophy, astrology, hobbies, sports, and so on. However, the most common books in every store were “Zur See” by Dörte Hansen and “Meine Ferne Schwester” by Judith Lennox. The simplest reason behind selling this book is that it sells well.

The reading taste and the availability of books has recently varied so much in recent times that the predictability of the future generations of books and readers is quite tough. The marketing is growing so fast and so is the variety. Also, it becomes very competitive in this new era. At the same time, it has become easier to reach a global level.

When I ask the bookstores what they think of themselves. Thalia’s manager replies quite confidently, “I guess we are quite complete, yet we are not specialized like others, but we almost have all the books that sell.” Again, when it comes to rivalry, nothing comes close to Thalia. There is not even competition with them. The manager from Vaternahm replies, “we just manage to be in the market by selling the books at a cheaper price. We don’t think we will ever be the competitor of Thalia.”  The publishers do not influence keeping any books in the stores. All the bookstores are chain bookshops. So, it is mainly decided by the central department and by the manager of the bookstore. However, only Thalia says that sometimes some influential publishers request them to keep some books. Readers are not influenced by any bookstores but indeed, all the bookstores keep the bestseller option in focus. Only in Thalia, there is a reading environment, and they also try to do some event management even though they are not much of a help. Still, they try to do events twice a year.
